TNM, a party of young professionals, submits list

AS the country prepares for General and Regional elections slated for March 2, 2020, Nomination Day yesterday January 10, 2020 saw scores of supporters from both large and small parties gathered in front of the Umana Yana, to shower the parties of their choice with cheers, as they came out to submit their list of candidates to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).

One of such parties is the New Movement Party (TNM). With support from Dr. Turhane Doerga, The New Movement party is a diverse youth-based political party with a promising vision to transform Guyana for all, through the utilisation of young leaders in key positions. With leadership from presidential candidate, Dr. Asha Kissoon, and prime ministerial candidate, Dr. Gerald Forde, they are expected to contest the General elections in six out of 10 regions.

In an interview with the Guyana Chronicle, Dr. Gerald Forde, related, “although difficulties were faced before Nomination Day, we were able to complete our list of candidates and successfully submit it to the commission, even though upon submission it was brought to our attention that a few pages of our documents were received by officials with missing signatures. We are however, working along with GECOM to correct this issue as soon as possible.”

The New Movement’s manifesto promises the reform of the education system, engage in the research and development of technology, constitutional and prison reform, along with the creation of jobs through the hemp industry and the construction of an oil refinery for Guyanese citizens. “We want improvements in all areas through change in leadership. Every promise that we make to you, we have solutions to tell you how we are going to solve them all,” Dr. Kissoon said.

With much enthusiasm, the leaders of the party made it known that they are aiming for the skies but even if they are offered only two seats in parliament, it is deemed a start towards them being a voice for the younger generation. Moving ahead from Nomination Day, the party plans to continue vigorous campaigning throughout various communities during the electoral season, up until the big day – March 2.

Speaking with the Guyana Chronicle, a member of the aforementioned political party, Latchman Dinayal, expressed that he joined the TNM because he shares the same political ideologies as the leaders and other members of the group.
He too believes that in order to create a better Guyana, “youths are to be positioned among the policy makers of this country.”

“We are constantly told that we are the future… if this is so; give us the opportunity to lead in a clean and fair manner. Allow us to not only make promises, but to walk the walk”.
Comprised of young professionals hailing from various career paths – from doctors to engineers – The New Movement party first graced the political scene on the November 23, 2019 with their campaign launch at their head office in Georgetown.
