The Mayor and City Council of Georgetown must be respected

Dear Editor,

I have seen comments emanating from Mayor Narine upon his re-election to serve the municipality of Georgetown for the ensuing year 2021. He encouraged officers to not engage in politics since they were hired to execute an administrative responsibility. I found that surprisingly interesting, since one would think in 2020 such matters did not need to be dealt with publicly, due to several prior events playing out in the press. Nevertheless, I listened and observed his comments hoping that no local government officer would act in such a way that it can be perceived in such a manner.

While watching the news, I saw a staff of the Mayor and City Council stating that she does not take instructions from the Council. I was shocked since I know that Cap 28:01 states clearly that instructions can be given to any local government officer by the Council. Immediately, I remembered Ms. Sooba’s tenure as Town Clerk with her regular confrontations at the Council and I hoped this was not the eve of her ‘Second Coming.’ I was pleased that the Council opted to change the individual from acting in the post, since she acted out of her legal remit and placed the Council in an unnecessary and uncomfortable situation. Kudos to the Mayor and Councillors for their leadership in handling that matter swiftly.

Regards,
Rohan Jagnarine
