PNC should throw in the towel; PPP will not last long

Dear Editor,

The PNC-led coalition is reluctant to accept defeat in the March 2 elections fearing it would be shut out of power for a long time. But PNC has nothing to fear from PPP’s longevity. PPP will not last long. The PNC historically has brought PPP to its knees going back to late 1950s. Our people control the security sectors and the bureaucracy. In addition, our people control the capital city, the seat of economic and political power. Our party has the capacity to bring down PPP government anytime as we did so many times. Prolonging this outcome is damaging the interests of our party and would make it difficult to rebuild and regain the government.

In addition, it is my belief that a PPP government under Irfaan Ali’s Presidency won’t last long. It is just a matter of time before PPP’s ambitious and more qualified politicians move against him. Our obstinacy in accepting defeat has led to PPP forces uniting against Mr. Granger and the coalition. Irfaan’s Presidency will collapse quickly once we concede defeat.

PPP barely won the elections with 33 seats against 31 for the PNC-led coalition and one for the combined list of small parties. After a few months of Irfaan’s governance, by November, a no-confidence motion is likely to pass bringing an end to that government and new elections. The PNC led coalition is likely to return by January. It is in our party’s interest to accept the electoral outcome, throw in the towel, concede defeat, start the rebuilding effort of PNC. PPP will buckle quickly! I appeal to the supporters of the coalition to urge our President Mr. Granger, and party leadership to accept defeat. Prolonging the inevitable will only hurt our interests.
