Nageer is hypocritical on flagrant human rights violations

Dear Editor,

While perusing the letters section my interest was piqued at a certain missive. That title was “Targeting, detention of Haitian travelers to Guyana is racist and violates their human rights”. This was written by prominent activist Sherlina Nageer. Nothing could be more hypocritical.

It must be said that I actually agree with the contents of her letter. The sudden acts against these Haitians are indeed disturbing. However, Nageer has zero moral authority to comment on flagrant human rights violations. Where was her vociferous mouth during that five months period where democracy was nearly underwhelmed? As she is loud now, where was her voice when thousands of votes were nearly blatantly disregarded due to the attempts of the PNC rigging cabal? Why did she go silent? Cat got her tongue?

Nageer is a notable Rodneyite and WPA activist. It’s funny since Rodney was adamant against the Burnhamite rigging that took place in the 70s. This sudden silence on Nageer’s part on the rigging from March to August suggests something dark. It signals a quiet departure from the Rodneyite ideologies of the WPA and a creeping into the bed of the PNC. Keeping a PNC heart, but a WPA face.

It simply bothers me that she, Karen DeSouza, Alissa Trotz all went silent during those dark five months. All of these WPA activists suddenly went into hiding. A damning revelation, since the WPA emerged in the 70s to take on the dictatorial Burnham administration that squatted in office by blatant electoral fraud. Those dark five months when basic human rights were violated, and now they are rearing their heads to attack the new Government. Hypocrisy is a shameful entity.

I do stand against the alarming acts against the Haitians. However, Sherlina Nageer should be the last individual to comment on them. One cannot gloss over one blatant human rights violation and condemn another.

Yours truly,
Suresh Kissoon.
