ELECTIONS 2020: Carter Center urges patience

The Carter Center Elections Observer Mission is urging voters to be patient as they cast their vote for a Government of their choice Monday.

“We’re collecting reports from all over the country. This will be a very well observed election,” Jason Carter, Co-Leader of the observer mission told the News Room at the Campbellville Secondary School.

“We have seen a number of polling stations already and all we can say is we’re excited for the people of Guyana to exercise their patience. We’re excited for them and ask that they be patient both with us and with the process as it unfolds,” Carter said three hours after the polls open.

He added that there are some isolated issues experienced as it relates to long lines and slothful process but nothing major.

“One of the ways we’re asking people to be patient is that we have to get a complete picture of what’s going on so single reports from single polling stations –we need to be careful,” Carter told the News Room.

The Carter Center has been observing elections in Guyana since 1992. The goal is to look at international standards for elections observers and will present recommendations.

The Center will be releasing its preliminary report on Wednesday.

This year, the body is fielding 41 observers in all of the ten administrative regions.

There are other international observers from the Organisation of American States (OAS), CARICOM, European Union and Commonwealth.
