Another red-letter day is in the making

Dear Editor,

The month of June is highly significant in our political calendar. It was on the June 16, 1948 that five sugar workers were slain at the hands of colonial police which became the catalyst for the formation of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP). It was also on June 13, 1980 that Guyanese historian and revolutionary Dr. Walter Rodney was assassinated.
These are two significant milestones in our political history which will forever be etched in our collective memory.

To these must now be added, whether by coincidence or design, the long awaited declaration of the results of the March 2 poll on June 16, a historic day in its own right given the fact that it represented the first time in our recorded history that it took so long for a declaration to be made of results of national elections. It is also the first time that an entire recount of ballots was ever undertaken.

As the nation awaits the final results of the March 2 poll, another red-letter day is in the making with the anticipated declaration of the results on June 16, 2020.
