A shameful response by WPA to Dr Pat Rodney’s remarks

Dear Editor,

The WPA’s response to Dr Pat Rodney’s remarks represents a shameful diatribe that is not only opportunistic, but it places rank political opportunism over one’s moral compass. Rather than address Dr. Rodney’s comments directly, the WPA elected instead to give us a history lesson on the life and legacy of Walter Rodney while tap dancing around the issues raised by Dr. Rodney.  Here is Dr. Pat Rodney in her own words

“What has been distressing for me is that very decent people have remained silent and that is how we come to the position we are in,” she noted, adding that there must be strong resistance to those who would attach themselves to Rodney’s legacy in order to reap narrow political dividends in the present that have nothing to do with healing, reconciliation and social and economic transformation.

Dr. Pat Rodney could not be clearer.  She says there should be strong resistance to those who attached themselves to Rodney’s legacy to reap narrow political benefits.  One has to wonder to whom she is referring.  Dr. Rodney’s concerns cannot simply be wished away with cash transfers payments or political expediency.

For those who loved Walter no amount of spin will hide the betrayal and the hurt felt from those who walked with him and who have either gone completely silent or are twisting themselves into knots to justify their betrayal. To quote from Shakespeare, “You all did love him once, not without cause. What cause withholds you then to mourn for him? —” .

Just like the noble Brutus who claims he did it for the good of Rome, the WPA now claims they are supporting the coalition government for the good of Guyana.  While one is free to support whichever party he/she wishes, it is dishonourable to use Walter Rodney’s name to rationalize such cheap political posturing. Conscience demands better, honour and decency should be made of sterner stuff.

Yours faithfully,

Yvette Short
