$220M in ‘ganja’ destroyed in Berbice River

RANKS of the Guyana Police Force, on Friday, destroyed 12 acres of marijuana cultivation at Haraculli Creek in the Berbice River.

The illegal drugs have an estimated street value of $220M. The eradication exercise, which lasted for 13 hours, was headed by two senior officers and included 16 other ranks.

Reports indicated that an additional plot of land – about six acres – was prepared for cultivation and had 60 kilograms of harvested cannabis; three camps were found.

The fields, camps and dried cannabis were all destroyed by fire. No arrests were made and efforts are currently being made to trace the owners of the land with a view to instituting charges.
