Incumbent President and Leader of the APNU+AFC David Granger is appealing to his supporters and Guyanese to remain “calm and vigilant” as the nation awaits the official declaration of election results from the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).
In a statement at the close of polls Monday evening, the President commended GECOM for “conducting efficient polls”.
“We are appealing to our supporters now that the polls have closed, to remain calm and vigilant and we await the formal declaration of the results by the Elections Commission – the only authority to do so,” Granger said.
He noted that while the voting process was relatively smooth across the country, the coalition received reports of disturbances at some polling places.
In this regard, he noted that the APNU+AFC has been “monitoring the electoral process very carefully and where necessary we have made reports and over the next couple of hours we will continue to make reports of any incident of abuse or any irregularity which was reported by any member of the public.”
