BREAKING: Unverified Region 4 results declared; Jagdeo says it is fake, has full support of Int’l community

The Returning Officer of Region Four, Clairmont Mingo has declared unverified results for the region, claiming that the APNU+AFC Coalition received 136,458 votes and the PPP received 77,329 votes.

The results are starkly different from the votes tallied by the People’s Progressive Party from Statements of Poll which it has since made public.

Those Statements show the PPP with 80, 344 votes and the APNU+AFC 114,345.

The PPP Statements when added with results from the other nine regions show the PPP winning by over 17,000 votes.

The results for Region 4 were released to the media by the Public Relations Officer of GECOM, Yolanda Ward late Thursday without a lawful verification taking place. It was signed by Mr Mingo.

Observers and other political parties have agreed with the data provided by the PPP as they are also in possession of the Statements of Poll.

The results were not declared in the presence of the PPP nor were they provided with the results. After learning of the declaration, General Secretary of the PPP, Bharrat Jagdeo told reporters that the opposition will now request a recount of the votes.

Jagdeo challenged GECOM to provide the Statements of Poll to support the declaration.

“This is thievery, this is totally fake. Check the SOPs yourself for Region Four. People are smart in this country, they can read.

Jagdeo said the PPP is prepared to take action and has the full support of the international community.

“This is a threat to Guyana. We cannot take this sitting down. This is not a Banana Republic.”

Meanwhile, Co-Chair of the Carter Center Observer Mission, Jason Carter said the mission will remain in Guyana and will allow the Guyanese people to decide the way forward after listening to the results.

He said the Carter Center was not aware of the declaration of the results for Region Four.

“We will listen to both sides and let the Guyanese people decide…”

The PPP has since filed an injunction in the High Court which restrains the Guyana Elections Commission from declaring the unverified results of the March 2, 2020 general and regional elections and to compel the Returning Officer to comply with the legal process of verification.

The PPP filed the injunction through Attorney Anil Nandlall. A court-martial accompanied Nandlall to the GECOM Command Centre at High and Hadfield Streets, Georgetown and served the order on the Chief Elections Officer Keith Lowenfield.

A copy of the injunction which the News Room has seen revealed that the injunction is seeking to restrain GECOM and its agents from in any manner declaring the total number of valid votes of electors for each List of Candidates recorded in the Guyana National and Regional Elections unless the Returning Officer Clairmont Mingo and the Chief Elections Officer, Keith Lowenfield, comply with and ensures the compliance of the process set out by the provision” in section 84 of the Representation of the Peoples Act.
